Upcard in Blackjack
The upcard (also called the "up card" or "show card") is the dealer's face-up card that all players can see. It's the foundation of all basic strategy decisions.

Why the Upcard Matters
Your entire strategy depends on the dealer's upcard:
| Upcard | Dealer Strength | Your Approach |
|---|---|---|
| 2-6 | Weak (likely to bust) | Stand on stiff hands |
| 7-A | Strong (likely to make 17+) | Hit to improve |
Weak vs. Strong Upcards
Weak upcards (2-6): Dealer must hit until 17+, so they often bust. You can stand on weaker hands and let them take the risk.
Strong upcards (7-A): Dealer likely already has or will make a good hand. You need to improve your hand to compete.
The Hidden Variable
The upcard is only half the equation. The hole card is face-down. Basic strategy is built on probabilities of what that hole card might be.
